What is a Medical Cannabis Card?

What-is-a-Medical-Cannabis-Card

A Medical Cannabis Card, also known as a Medical Marijuana Card or MCA ID, is an official identification card that allows individuals to legally access and purchase medical cannabis products. State-approved programs issue these cards and are available to medical marijuana patients with specific qualifying conditions.

A Medical Cannabis Card proves that a licensed medical professional has authorized an individual to use medical cannabis to treat their condition. It provides patients legal protection and access to medical cannabis dispensaries or caregivers.

To obtain a Medical Cannabis Card, individuals must first have a documented diagnosis of a qualifying medical condition.

Once an individual has received a diagnosis, they must consult a medical marijuana doctor who can evaluate their medical history and determine if medical cannabis is a suitable treatment option. If the doctor approves, they will issue a medical marijuana recommendation, a requirement for applying for a Medical Cannabis Card.

To complete the application process, individuals must submit the necessary documents, such as identification, proof of residency, and their medical marijuana recommendation. Additionally, an application fee of $25 is applied, which covers administrative costs and the processing of the application.

After applying, it will be reviewed by Maryland’s medical marijuana program. If approved, the applicant will receive a confirmation email and an official Medical Cannabis Card. This card typically contains vital information, including the patient’s name, ID number, and expiration date.

It is important to note that Maryland Medical Cannabis Cards have an expiration date of 6 years. The cardholder is responsible for renewing their card before it expires to maintain legal access to medical cannabis.

Renewal Process Overview for MMCC Card

Renewing your Maryland Medical Cannabis (MCA) registration is necessary to ensure uninterrupted access to medical cannabis. Both patients and caregivers must renew their registration every six and two years, respectively. It is important to note that submitting a new application is not the correct way to renew.

To begin the renewal process, patients and caregivers who have not registered an account through the Maryland OneStop portal must create an account using the email address associated with their current registration. Existing account holders can simply log in to their Maryland OneStop account and follow the instructions below to renew their MCA registration:

1. Login to your Maryland OneStop account and go to “My Dashboard.”

2. Look for your MMCC registration ID number under “My Licenses, Permits, and Registrations” that is up for renewal.

3. Click on the green “Actions” button on the Registration header’s right side.

4. Select “Renewal Form” from the drop-down menu.

5. The renewal form will populate your pre-filled personal information and address from your initial application.

For caregivers, the steps are the same, except they should look for their MCA registration ID number under “My Licenses, Permits, and Registrations.”

After submitting the renewal form, you will receive a notification of approval. Once approved, log in to your Maryland OneStop account, order your MCA ID card, and pay the $25 fee.

If you need to update the email address associated with your account, contact the customer service department at (410) 487-8100.
